Three of Matagorda County’s strongest young men made the trip north to Abilene last weekend to show their strength in the State Powerlifting Championships held at the Taylor County Expo Center.
Van Vleck’s Wayne Foston competed in the 165-pound weight class where he weighed in at 163.2 pounds squatting 475 pounds, bench pressing 305 pounds and dead lifting 475 pounds for a total of 1,255 pounds, finishing in sixth place. Foston finished 135 total pounds out of first place.
Fellow Leopard Sam Bryant lifted in the 181-pound weight class Weighted in at 177.8 pounds, Bryant finished fourth in the class, 90 pounds out of first with lifts of squat 510 pounds, bench press 340 pounds and dead lift 540 for a total of 1,390.
Powerlifting coach Ruben Guerrero said “both boys did extremely well they left everything in the gym and should have no regrets we are very proud of them.”
Tidehaven High School junior Joe Woodson finished among the top 10 powerlifters in his weight class.
Woodson put together a 415 pound squat, 250 pound bench and a 465 pound deadlift for an overall total of 1,130 pounds. He finished ninth out of 12 lifters in the 198-pound class. Woodson weighed in at 185.4 making him the second lightest lifter in his class. A total of 1,620 pounds won the class, but competing as a junior Woodson will have the chance to trump that next year.
Tiger powerlifting coach John Kile said “Woodson performed well under pressure.”
“He did good,” Kile said. “He did what I asked him to do.”
